Education within the area Information Systems at the
University of Frankfurt

The Institut for Information Systems of the University of Frankfurt offers in the focal point "Information Systems and Information Economy" three sections of focal points, subdivided in:

With this Frankfurt Model we want to make sure that our graduates have apart from the Business Administration and Political Economy an excellent knowledge from all areas of Information Systems. Thus we contribute our part to the risening IT request for university graduates on the job market likewise the foundation boom in the e-commerce area. The focus in education is both excellent practice orientated and theoretical and methodological. The study take place in three steps:

1. Undergraduate Study

Lectures in the context of the basic study: Fundamentals of Information Systems

2. Intermediate Study

Education in the intermediate study: Information Systems as well as seminars in general Business Administration

3. Graduate Study

The education focus in the focal point "Information Systems and Information Management" covers three education types:


  • Obligation-to-vote-Meetings (Wahlpflichtveranstaltung)
  • Supplement Meetings (Ergänzungsveranstaltungen)
  • Selection Lectures (Wahlvorlesungen)

The examination system determines that in the focal point "Information Systems and Information Management" 48 CP (CP = Credit Points) are necessary for the distribution of a diploma. At least 24 CP must come from Obligation-to-vote-Meetings (in our focal point to a large extent with exercises) as well as at least 12 CP from seminars with two different Professors, but not more then 18 CP from seminars (likewise with at least two different Professors of the focal point). From Supplement Meetings (these are accountable CP from other focal points) it is possible to account max. 8 CP. Selection Lectures are only accountable to a amount of 6 CP. If a student from the available programm liked to study a half focal point (in addition to a whole other focal point), the before mentioned CP amount in the focal point "Information Systems and Information Management" is to bisect. We arranged in the focal point "Information Systems and Information Management" the Obligation-to-vote-Meetings in so called Core-Meetings which suggest that the sections of the focal point are closely together and Addition-Meetings. The term Core-Meeting, Addition-Meeting are no regular terms of the examination order!

Core-Meetings are regularly offered. Here it concerns 2 lectures and 1 excercise out of following sections of the focal point:

Information Management


  • IMG1:SWI6 Management of Operational Processes (6 CP)
  • IMG2:SWI6 Networked Information Systems (6 CP)

    Information are the basis of operational decisions and a important factor of production. Therefore an efficient operational information management represents a central factor of success apart for an enterprise. Information management possesses part from the technical a organizational component. Thus opens and requires the world-wide, evenmobile availability of the Internet new co-ordination forms, which involve appropriate modifications of the operational processes. Furthermore networks represent the basis for a application of distributed problem solution techniques to support operational decisions.

 

Development of Business Information Systems

  • EBI1:SWI6 Operational use of Data Bases (6 CP)
  • EBI2:SWI6 Software Engineering Management (6 CP)

    The organization of data base-supported Information Systems in enterprises is one of the central tasks of the Information Systems. The lecture of this focal point has the target to procure students a critical understanding for existing methods, tools and methodologies. A management perspective is taken as a basis, which connects socio-technical aspects with questions of economy and efficiency. Beyound that the students learn in exercises concrete abilities and talents.

Further sections of the focal point can come with accomodation of the new chair of Information Systems, esp. Mobile Commerce and Multilateral Security.

All Meetings are offered, with exception of reseach terms, every two terms.
In addition comes a special seminar "Information Systems", which is offered in each term and which should deepen the material of the lectures and meetings. Additionally to this education supply if it is possible and demanded we offer special meetings, e.g. "programming with JAVA", "Computer-Science-Industry" or "Network workgroups".
